    Site News

Fishingcorner is pleased to announce the launch of the first "Facebook of Fishing". We have called it "Fishbook". It is completely integrated to FishingCorner, but also uses some of your facebook information. New members can now log in to Fishing Corner using their facebook username and password and a FishingCorner account will automatically be created for them. Existing Fishing Corner members can link their Fishing Corner profile to their Facebook profile.

It has been great seeing the guys getting involved, updating their photos, changing their profiles and getting hooked up! This is a great tool for you to network your business, or to keep in touch with your friends. Not only have we received interest from South African Anglers, but I have seen some oversees anglers taking interest aswell. So log on and get involved!

    Server Upgrade

Fishing Corner has been a little slow the last while, and we have received some complaints that it has been taking a while to do things. The good News ? we have updated the server and Fishing Corner will now run lightning fast, so no more waiting! We have our own server now so can offer you website and email hosting at competitive rates. Call Shaun for more information.

    Problems uploading Photos

We have also had complaints about not being able to update photos and the reason for this has been out-updated web browsers. If you would like to upload your photos, please make sure that you update your web browser or download firefox or Google Chrome which is the latest lightweight browser and works very well, especially if having problems clicking the buttons in Fish-book. I started using it and it sorted out all of my fishbook problems.

    Fishing News

Unfortunately the sardines have not arrived this year, but there are still some good fish around. On my last few dives, I have seen some great shoals of garrick, and some huge salmon have been coming out, recently one of 45kg and 43kg. If you find the shoals of snoek - you are in for some serious action. I have also heard of some great cuta still around and everyone who has the patience to wait around has been rewarded with some great fish. Check out the gallery ? take a look at the 30 plus kg fish! In true July fashion, fishing is one of those hit and miss occasions, when you hit it, you hit it hard and when you miss you come home empty handed.

The barge has been quiet and Umdloti has fallen from grace this year. The mackrel make the occasional visit to Vetchies, but sometimes can only be enticed by baiting your yozuris. Zinkwazi has come and gone as the latest "secret spot", I saw the ESA guys releasing lots of couta there on tv last week but it seems to have gone quiet now. I wonder where the next northerly secret spot is for the Durban guys with company petrol? Anyone tried Amatikulu lately?

    Latest Sponsor

Our latest sponsor is SA Derivatives and SA Stock Brokers. Please support them (and our country) by investing any spare cash you may have in the stock market. Daniel is giving fishing corner members special broker rates, and the markets are down right now so it is an ideal time to get in. My hot tip: Buy low Sell high.

Was it just me or has couta season just come and gone without anyone noticing? Some of the bigger fish are still around for the pro's to catch but for the rest of us without the patience, snoek probably are a safer bet.

Look on the site for the new snoek trace for 2009, thanks to Mr Faulty for sharing this with us, one of the most generous people I know, he has provided a wealth of information, tips, tricks, secrets, abuse and entertainment to get Fishing Corner going and keep us interested, we are just wating for him to release his secret pap and curry powder recipe that he puts on his mackrel to catch those big couta.

Thank you all for your support of the Fishing Corner Salt Rock Competition, we had a great time. Are you remembering to favour Rainbow chickens? Put one of those nice Suzuki 4x4's in your shopping basket as well sometime!

A big thanks goes to those who mucked in on the day to help with the logistics of the competition, you know who you are (the ones still smelling like a braai with the sun-burnt backs), also thanks to PeterVW for allowing us to invade his front yard for the prize giving.

This weekend is the Winkelspruit competition and at the end of the month is the Westbrook competition, see the Fishing Corner website for entry forms and more info in the chat forums.

    Sim-safety

There has been increasing pressure to regulate kayak fishing in the past few years, so, to have a say in our sport the  South African Kayak Fishing Association (SAKFA) was formed. They discovered that new regulations are being discussed that,  for safety sake, every kayak fisherman should fill in a launch register indicating the time and location of the launch. Because kayak fisherman can launch from many different beaches, it is not practical to place physical launch register books at those beaches, the alternative suggested by the authorities was to limit launching to a few designated, controlled launch sites.

We have developed a totally electronic system that allows the kayak fisherman to launch anywhere and still register their launch and catch. This is where the sim-safety sms system comes in, making use of modern technology for a modern sport.

The new system allows each kayaker to register their launches in a central database using their cell phone by sending an SMS just before launching, and a catch report when returning to the beach. We developed the system to satisfy SAKFA that safety measures are in place and to provide a system for logging of catch reports. This not only makes our sport safer, but also protects its future and provides researchers and the legislators with much needed data for decision making.

How it works: When you send a launch SMS to 35174, the system automatically records the date and time of your launch, as well as your cell phone number (which you need to link to your name from the controlling website - www.sim-safety.com).

The only information required in the SMS message is your location. You need to tell us where you are launching from.

For those of you wondering why the cell phone tower cannot give our location, while technically possible, it is too expensive and impractical to use Location-based services (LBS) as these only work where there are always 2 or more cell phone towers available, and the network charges are exorbitant.

It's that simple: before you launch, simply SMS your launch location to 35174. We will log it into a database with your cell phone number, and date and time received.

When you return to shore, simply send us a blank SMS so that the database knows that you have returned. If you have caught fish, send us your catch report and this information will be used to determine your unofficial kayak fishing ranking.

    Armchair competition

In order to spread the word and raise awreness of 35174, We are happy to announce that Stealth have sponsored a R500 gift voucher to be drawn for one lucky sms winner at the end of April. The Stealth voucher can be used to buy tackle, clothing and paddling accessories in their online shop at www.stealthpp.co.za so you up-country visitors can also enter.

All you have to do is go to www.sim-safety.com, register on the website (free!!) , connect your phone to your web name (instructions are on the website- it costs R3) and you are in the competition!

To increase your chances, you can SMS the word "Stealth"  as many times as you like to:

    35174

(sms costs R3, only South African mobile phones are eligible)

For all of those who registered on the old Mobile tally Website (no longer in use), your registrations and sms's are already copied across to the new website and are eligible.

For those of you that are currently using the system as an sms safety system for launches and as a catch report system, all of those sms's will also go into the draw and increase your chances of winning. All sms's sent to 35174 during the Salt Rock competition earlier this year will also be used in the lucky draw.

We encourage you to start using the system every time you go fishing, and then visit the website and complete your catch reports. I know it doesnt look flashy and it is by no means finished, but over 100 hours of work have gone into the website, and many more in planning and meetings  by 3 people to get this thing going, for no guaranteed remuneration,  our satisfaction comes in seeing people start using the system, and possibly one day, providing a crucial piece of information that might help rescue someone.

    Un-official Ranking System

Dont forget the un-official ranking system is a spin-off of the safety system. When you log in to www.sim-safety.com you can add your catch reports to the system if you have sent a beach sms. (Dont worry, all catch reports are confidential). In addition to putting you in the running for the Stealth voucher, all verified catch reports and launch reports will be used in your sim-saftey ranking which will make you eligible for a wildcard entry into the Stealth top-ranked showdown competition at the end of the year.

We have decided on the points to be allocated for the ranking: You will receive the following points for every verified sms you send:

1 point for a launch, 1 point for a catch of a game fish, 2 points for a catch and release of a game fish. Sharks caught and released unharmed are also eligible for 1 point.

    • The sim-safety ranking is completely independant of the official competition ranking system.
    • Compulsory use of the sim-safety system in competitions is at the discretion of the organisor, but you are free to use it whenever you want.

Verification works online on the website, you can appoint buddies who can see your catch reports and tick them off as being authentic, but I haven't quite finished developing that feature yet, in the meantime, sms your cath report in (see below for additional instructions), then log on to the website and  convert your sms into catch reports by selecting the type of fish, weight and location. We will work on the verification later. After verification comes the ranking system which I haven't developed yet either!

So to summarise:o summarise: every launch you make with a sim-safety sms improves your ranking and improves your safety and puts you in the running for that R500 stealth voucher in May!

Note: www.sim-safety.com is not a Stealth website, however the competition prizes, and input into the design and maintenance of the sms saftey system are generously provided free of charge by Stealth and others in the interests of building a safer kayakfishing community in South Africa. Additional sponsors and partners in this system are welcome to contact us. The system is endorsed by the South Africa Kayak Fishing Association   (SAKFA). The sms receiving system is designed and developed by  Gate2SMS (Malan Barnard), the website is designed and developed by Jasper and sponsorship and ideas provided by Brett.

  • We look forward to seeing your sms's!
